I have no idea. It's ridiculous! Do they not realize that literally everything we need to do can be learned on the job? Like I've never known how to do EVERYTHING the first day, and still always managed to figure things out just fine. I don't get it. I guess it's probably because of the bad job market? With so many people out of work, I guess they feel like they can be even more picky than usual 🤷♀️
I truthfully think it is the job market these days. Companies know that people are so desperate for a role that they can look for a unicorn and probably find someone who will take it. Companies are taking advantage of the job market.
Apparently its also common practice in the food side to tell some with years of experience and certifications that they still dont have enough and wont be able to handle the job. Meanwhile im stairing at a teen doing the majority of the job because they dont have someone hired for the position. Ive also been told that the pay range listed, that made me apply to the job, wasnt supposed to be that high and they dont know why it was but they can pay me 3-5 dollars under it an hour until theyve had a month to evaluate my work ethic and then they could give me a small raise. Also asking for 40 hours almost makes these peoples eyes pop out of their head.
Many retail jobs now list higher qualifications and experience because companies are trying to attract candidates who can take on supervisory, merchandising, or management responsibilities from day one. The rise of e-commerce, technology in stores, and complex supply chains has also increased skill expectations. While entry-level roles still exist, job postings often target “ideal” candidates, which can make openings feel intimidating or like ghost jobs.
