The only people who call Chicago Thin Crust “tavern style” are recent transplants.
It was never called that. It was just called “thin crust.”
And any East Coaster ordering one was just shocked and disgusted by what they did to it. So they decided to rename it so that wouldn’t happen again.
We just grew up calling it “pizza”. And yes, deep dish is only for tourists.
You know it to be true. Chicago loves bar pizza. The deep dish is cool but it’s not the same thing. They aren’t really competitors. Not because tavern is so much better than deep dish. It’s because deep dish isn’t pizza. It’s something else that is awesome but not the same thing.
People aren’t choosing between tavern and deep dish if they have a hankering for pizza. They occupy different spaces.
Your Ohio (or whatever) is showing, CD. It’s thin crust.
And… thin crust spring/summer. Deep dish winter/fall when I need something cozy.
Tavern? Tavern. 100%
New York style!!! NY Slices in Highland Park is awesome. Deep dish is fine, but the rest of the regular crust places taste like BORING old tomatoes!
Detroit style.
