Black Panther is fiction. It’s a comic book film. There are so many wonderful, amazing and REAL contributions, achievements and legacies forged by black people in America and around the world. Please stop acting like Black Panther means a goddamn thing. I didn’t hear any of this shit for Spawn or Blade and those were both arguably better films with black super negro protagonists lol.
Anyway back to the fact that this industry has virtually no minority representation among the rank and file, let alone the leadership and that “diversity” typically means a white woman in a leadership role. I applaud the women vanguard for sure. But it always seems odd to me that a cultural group (blacks) whose culture is so often picked from, borrowed from or otherwise purloined and repurposed to sell goods are so often left out of the business in its entirely.

and yeah, the white women are cool and I respect them and all, but the focus of women in the light of #metoo only accented the fact that the industry has two problems: race *and* sexual misconduct. more women may end up in power, but what about the black and brown people?
Imagine seeing that daily as a black woman and wondering if you’re working for no reason since it’s clear the c-suites at these agencies are not for you. The list (and that photo) only reinforced that for so many of us in which that is a daily in-office reality.
Mayhaps focus on the disruption that Black Panther will bring, and look for all the positive discourse it has created? Everyone and their mother is talking about this movie and it's impact + message. If anything, at least the movie has a great focus (not that I've seen it).
It's slow, but multicultural is becoming a more mainstream concern every day. I'm sorry, I know you're frustrated, and you have every right to be, especially when our industry stacks on so much other frustrating crap.
But it's getting better. At least, underneath those awards, we're seeing more and more people fighting to displace a broken system.
do we see those people working on it though? all i see is every poc i know giving up on this industry and heading where the money is. idk if patience is going to help here
Nobody is going to give you anything. You may feel like an outsider but unless you have the guts to stick it out, nobody is going to make you feel comfortable. Take what you want. When the client loves you and your work and they are asking for you to be on accounts it won’t matter who is receptive to you being a PoC. Dazzle these motherfuckers.

black panther was great, amazing, but it's still 2:15 of an escape.
A-list spots aren’t given because you’re white. And they’re not given because you’re black either. There’s a lot more to focus on during Black history month, which should be about how we understand and appreciate black culture.

Add class into the diversity convo and you get rich/ upper middle class white women served as “diversity” in this industry. Laughable.
For what it's worth, the agency where I work is packed with POC, the owner is Black, my manager is Black, and our major focus is multicultural. Just know there are people out there who are indeed fighting their way up, and succeeding.
As for Black Panther...sure, it's a fiction, but it's created REAL conversation. Discounting something for being fiction then also removes every other fictional piece of culture that has contributed to change. Narratives, stories, content, whatever you call it, all have a strong role in where we go.
