Would you take a 20% pay cut, to work 20% less hours?

E.G. work 32 hours per week and make 160k,
Vs work 40 hours a week and make 200k, all other benefits remaining the same.

Both are more than what I make now so I’d def take the $160k

Nah, can’t go backwards

We can take a 20% reduction to work 80% of time so like 11 weeks of extra PTO. I’m doing that next year

like

We’re hiring for consulting roles in full force, at least from campus. Lateral from industry has always been a bit tougher/less common for us

I had that chance and turned it down when i took a a new job. They offered me my choice of taking an extra day off a week and getting a roughly 18% bonus for putting in 40 hours a week.

Since i took the offer during covid, i was already feeling brunt out being at home so much with nothing to do. Working the extra 8 hours gives me more distractions. Plus what am i going to do with that extra day off that i cant do with pto? My friends dont work 4 day work weeks, my wife doesnt, i cant spend that time with anyone i care about. Im stuck at home anyway with all of the time in the world to work on my hobbies and oddly enough im not pursuing them in favor of veging to defcon talks and mtg gameplay on youtube.

If you asked me a year ago i might have had a different answer.

like

Yes.

So would I take 160k but have a three day weekend every week vs 200k but the current situation now?

160k and mandatory 3 day weekends. Sign me up.

I did it at Deloitte... so yeah. Worth getting my time back for sure

No.

Care to explain your rational. More money? Would you do the opposite? Work 20% more hours and get a 20% increase?

Depends on the hours. If it’s 40vs32, I’ll pick 40 knowing it’s a little amount compared to where I am now

No. I don't yet have anything better to do with that time. Using 200k vs 160k, I'd rather have an extra 40k a year than 8 more hours of Netflix per week. If I had a family or side hustle, my priorities might change.

For 8 hours I would take the extra 40k

Who works 40 hours per week?

I work 4 days a week 100% (10h/day) and take Fridays off. Been doing it for almost 4 years now. Best decision of my life. And I do not open my laptop on Friday and block my calendar so no one can reach me.
See if you can negotiate that.

Company on track for 22 goals. Traditionally included 2% profit sharing at YE, this year however comes with a unique caveat.

The CEO added a qualifier, to be eligible for the payout one must agree to and sign a binding arbitration agreement. In the CEOs email to staff he indicates these agreements are standard in most companies and typically required for new hires.

I’m curious to get insight from others. Is this standard practice and generally required for new hires? Something feels off.
