The para we work with “ covers” us. I leave easier things for them to do because they are usually short a person. This is why I almost never take time off. If we get a sub at all, the para is teacher, and the sub is the para. Usually the subs are parents in the district and are untrained. A few are retired teachers or paras. Some are great. Some are not so helpful. Plus, we don’t know who is “covering” us until 8am the morning of, and it is subject to change depending on who is out and what duties need to be covered.

If we can't get a sub, or EAs (Education Assistants) usually have to fill in, or another teacher absorbs the class.
I love getting a great sub too! It makes leaving so much easier knowing the class is in good hands. I try to leave real assignments, so the kids stay engaged and don’t just waste time. It’s always a relief when the sub is great at keeping everyone on track!

Exactly, I don't want my students to think an assignment is just busy work, because they may not be on their best behavior.
