For me, emotional intelligence has been the most valuable. Being able to read the room, anticipate reactions, and adjust my tone or approach has helped me keep clients calm even when things go sideways. Negotiation matters, but empathy and clear communication are just as key.
Mentor
Communication has to be the biggest, in all definitions of the word. You need to know how to communicate to someone to build that relationship. You need to know how to communicate to stand firm in negotiations without losing the relationship. You need to know how to read a room.
Ability to adapt your communication style when you have a mercurial client. How to differentiate when to be gentle and when to firm (and doing both is also a skill). Keeping your face neutral when someone says something reaaaaallllyyyy dumb but needs to be taken seriously is also very handy lol
Reading the room is the strongest soft skill I’ve learned. Also, your situation and caving to the 5k happens at every level. It’s not uncommon. You will also do it again. Don’t beat yourself up about it. The important thing is you recognize it and will continue to improve because you understand the value of what you’re selling!
