While travlng for work, I got sick & had to miss a planned excursion. Later, at dinner, I was eating bread because my stomach was still upset. A coworker joked in front of the group that maybe I had drank too much.

The comment bothered me because it wasn’t true, & it felt dismissive. This isn’t the first time this person has made teasing comments, but this one felt different because I was clearly not feeling well.

How have you handled coworkers whose humor comes at someone else’s expense?

😂 how?? What would you have said? I need to get better at comebacks.

I would have responded with “Well if you think I’ve been drinking, how about you show me how you drink” and start a shot challenge with Tequila and the jack-ass would have stumbled into work the next day because there is no keeping up with me… Make sure the entire team is present… yes I am sometimes HR’s worst nightmare… but I’d be a legend thereafter and no one would dare pick on me again after word spread. Oh and the tab would show up as a happy hour on my expense report as team building.

Be the change. Be the reason HR gets involved.

You are wicked! Love it.

If you’re not as adventurous as I am, and more “prim and proper”, then perhaps guilt trip the person along the lines of wellness. “So if I got sick or seriously injured you wouldn’t be a team player and be supportive? Guess (insert name) has a core value problem over here not caring about teammates overall wellbeing.” Make sure the Partner can hear it say it loud enough it can be overhead.

You crack me up. That’s actually witty!

Curious. What's everyone's all in tax rate at year end (first and second years). Thanks. Looking for a percentage.

I realized a slow pace at work is really bad for me. A couple years ago I was experiencing burn out from my fast paced job supporting transactions, and believed by moving to a slower job in a lower cost area, I would be sailing off to the sunset. Wrong, I spend weeks following up with other teams, often times they forgot what we discussed, so I spent 50% if the time reminding them of the topics and next steps. I spend most of my time writing memos no one will read.
