Worried about potential recession and layoffs...
Me. Every single day. Since I started practicing.

Was recently in the same boat. I was already looking but turned up the volume when I was told the news. Got a job in less than 45 days and had a lot of interest. You may be surprised that the market isn’t too bad depending on your practice area. Best of luck my friend.
Are you me? I was also let go today too. Environment was hella toxic though so I saw it coming. Hope we can land on our feet.
I was let go a month ago from a toxic firm. I also had a bad feeling for a while that it was coming. Still in the middle of the job search but still feeling optimistic and that getting let go was the best thing to happen.
You are absolutely correct! What’s worse is when it is not about your work product, but because they just don’t want you working there anymore!
No matter how loyal you are to your firm, no matter how hard you work or how good you are at doing your job, you cannot fight the inevitable, if they want you gone. I am so over trying to please lawyers who are just human beings just like me. I would rather work digging holes for a living than to be subject to that kind of treatment ever again (someone making me question my self worth!). Been there, done that! Just because you have a JD behind your name, doesn’t make you smarter, and it definitely doesn’t make you any better. Have some respect for the subordinates!
Thanks guys, I needed this. I feel like I’m going to get let go soon. This is helpful
I was let go a few weeks ago. It’s been hella tough mentally.
This is the most validating thread I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve been the recipient of incredible demoralizing comments about my performance and was put on a PIP that I’m certain I have no way off of. I’ve always given my job my best and the way they spoke to me just shredded my confidence.
I’m so sorry A3 it sucks. While I’ve not been on a PIP, I’ve been let go 3 times over the course of my 20-year legal career. The first was a layoff, the second time I was let go for “performance issues” a month after I returned from mat leave (!) and the 3rd time I was let go, again ostensibly for performance reasons but in actual fact it was a down to combination of a bad cultural fit and the fact that they didn’t need me in the first place.
Like you, my confidence also took a beating but it recovered when I realised that these things a) happen quite often and b) are rarely (if ever) personal and absolutely not a reflection on you.
I was put on a PIP at my last job (found a new job before the axe) but the fear of what would happen and whether I’d be fired or put on a PIP when I felt partners start avoiding me and giving me the cold shoulder before the PIP was worse than being on the actual PIP (which still was no fun).
