I think radical individuality has become so common that no one cares about others anymore, possibly because they are also tired of being taken advantage of. When you are an honest empathetic individual it is hard to understand that many others are not this way and seek to manipulate others that are. Personally, I would still rather lead with empathy and kindness verses becoming jaded and bitter. I hate being taken advantage of but giving the benefit of the doubt makes me feel better.
It's not rewarded. Studies show that nearly everyone votes out the most empathetic person first. Its similar to politics. We don't have a leftist party so republicans and liberals shift more right each decade resulting in normalizing human rights violations and ironically, they're miserable too. We have to condition ourselves to accept empathy and model it and then support those who have it. But overwhelmingly what I see is that people like the smooth talker not the awkward one lol.
