Why did it feel like being constantly compared to coworkers instead of being developed? I noticed competition was encouraged more than collaboration. How did comparison show up where you worked?

My manager tries to do this with me. He acts like my office mate is so special and impressive and I should be more like him. Unfortunately, that kind of manipulation doesn't work on me. But it doesn't stop my manager from trying, lol.

That kind of comparison can feel manipulative, even when it’s framed as motivation. It makes sense that it wouldn’t land well. Everyone works differently, and being constantly measured against someone else rarely brings out anyone’s best work.

That’s some corporations idea of fostering high returns. They believe a competitive workplace is the best way to ensure everyone is putting in a 110%. They care more about results far more than culture.

That framing comes up a lot, and I’ve seen it too. What stood out for me was how short-term results were prioritized without considering the long-term cost to people and teams. In my experience, performance without a healthy culture isn’t very sustainable.

I am a high productivity person and I hate when I’m used as an example. It creates an environment of competition for no reason! Just let people work to their own standards and expectations as individuals rather than always need to be more like someone else

This really resonates. Being held up as the “example” can unintentionally create pressure and competition instead of motivation. I agree, development should be individualized, not comparative. Thanks for sharing that perspective.

So I’m in my second trimester. Everything has come back normal and great. Anatomy scan went beautifully. Now I’m getting cramps really low in my left side that I would say are like a 6-7 on pain scale and they’re like every few minutes. I don’t think they’re Braxton hicks it feels more like period cramps I’ve experienced before. Anyone else experience this? Is it normal? Can I take something for the pain?

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?
