Hey 🐠 , how do you guys shop for car insurance? Having a hard time finding a true aggregator site for comparison—they all direct me to individual insurers for quotes. My rate at GEICO just went up 40% so want to shop around a bit…

If you bank at a credit union, they may have an insurance department that will contact multiple insurers for you and get you multiple quotes, at better prices than buying direct.

like

Your bank may offer that service as well.

There are probably brokers that carry multiple brands but most of the larger companies it’s seem to sell through exclusive channels. I’m in Ca and just priced USAA which I’ve heard good things about and my current AAA insurance was a lot less. I’m not willing to go with a sketchy company.

like

USAA is ranked so poorly across the board I don't know how they're still in business.

I just recently cancelled my progressive auto policy, no fault to them. I was always happy as long as my insurance was less than $100 a month. I recently purchased a home and to get a savings of nearly $4k annually I had to bundle my auto. It's now nearly half of what progressive was and I was super skeptical initially but after looking into the company it's been around for decades so it's not going anywhere. It's been a long time since I've actually had an "agent."

What I'm trying to say is that there are so many options these days and I wouldn't limit yourself to just the big names on TV.

like

Interesting. I have been with them 17 years and had great experiences so far, including for a variety of claims. Big and small. I do need to do a new check of a bunch of other companies for each of my insurances to check my pricing though.

We just had to get quotes from individual companies and compare their coverages. Ended up bundling car and home for discount.

helpful

Got it, that’s what I’ve been doing too.

Independent agents will shop for you. That’s what I’ve always done, and revisit every couple of years to re-price.

You don’t directly pay the independent broker but yes, the insurance company does pay the agent. Those commissions are small though (1%-5%). A company with no retail offices and just a call center might have lower operating costs. But a company that does a better job underwriting or investing premiums also could have lower premiums. Look at companies that are mutual insurance companies. This means that are owned by their member (kinda like a credit union) and don’t pay earnings back to shareholders.

Mine went up as well. I would contact customer support - I lowered the amount of miles driven per year down from 12k to 3k, which decreased my overall cost by 30%

Hello everyone, I'm trying to get into real estate investing. Some of the books I've read have talked about buying a multi unit property and utilizing investors to get the necessary capital. Does anyone have experience in getting investors? How do you identify investors who may be interested? Are there any sites where you can invest in or post investment opportunities?
Thank you in advance.

Is it too late in our lives to jump into a mortgage?

So my fiancée and I are relatively late in terms of finally landing well paying jobs and being able to save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. We’re both 36 and currently rent a 2 bedroom in NY and have a combined savings of $35,000 which she wants to use as a down payment on a condo. I kinda just wanna continue saving while renting. I also literally just started contributing to my 401K so I’m also late in the game for that too.
