Why do older colleagues act like wanting work-life balance means you're not committed? I heard someone say 'Your generation doesn't want to work hard' because I left at 5:30pm. I'd been there since 7am. Is having a life really controversial?

Not all boomers say crap like this, but it's always boomers saying crap like this. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, back in your day you walked uphill both ways to school, never got a participation trophy and spent 12 minutes a week with your family. Just because you never figured out work-life balance doesn't mean the rest of us should be shamed for striving for it. Keep clocking out, and do it at 5, not 5:30. Life is too short to spend slaving away after hours at work.

Exactly! Work-life balance isn’t laziness, it’s just being smart about your time. Staying late doesn’t automatically mean you’re more committed.

That's just the way it goes, you can't take that stuff too seriously. Older people always think they've had it rough, and they harangue the younger generation. It's probably been that way since Roman times. In fairness, I've got some colleagues who are always phoning it in, so my generation brings some of the criticism down on itself.

like

Yeah, I get that. Some people do earn the criticism, but wanting a life outside work doesn’t mean you’re not committed, it just means you value balance.

And they wonder why their kids won't talk to them ;)

Also, those long shifts used to consist of three martini lunches, a quick round of golf, and chasing their secretaries around the desk for half the day.

Over the last 60 years, the only thing to increase more than the cost of living is productivity. That means fewer people are doing more work more efficently. So, you're doing more work in 6 hours than 3 of them used to do in 12 hours. And are getting less money then they did. So, yeah, leave on time, because the company will do the exact same thing when your gone , whether you worked your exact shift, or stayed three hours late (without pay) every night.

Perhaps you should have read the entire statement that was made and be very careful when you climb off of your soapbox, as to avoid injury.

I have an offer accepted from Elevance 125k (Anthem) and w a good team and seems that WLB would be ok. Also, Amazon hiring manager wants to interview me for a job. Is just a hiring manager int. so obvi nothing guaranteed. Salary if offered will be more than 150k. My question is should I accept the interview and see where it goes? Is it really worth it to proceed with a company like Amazon for 25k+. I live in CA so $ is imp but I do have a toddler so WLB is also imp. Both role are Sr. MGR.

Crowe is hiring for quite a few positions across the US (Internal Audit, IT controls and cyber/digital security, Compliance, etc)… I’m a manager and would think some of these niche areas have great opportunity for new folks to excel rather quickly. Great flexibility and mobility policies. I’d be happy to chat if interested and get you directly in touch with the right people internally.
