The real answer to that is because they want you to do all kinds of work that really shouldn't be your job. I've never seen a job description for Admin Asst. that didn't include a line like "and other duties as assigned". This has included light janitorial service, light landscaping, basic office machine maintenance and some repair, first tier tech support, general office babysitter-in-chief, and the list goes on. I've even been pressured to run personal errands off the clock (that one's a hard "no"). It's harder for them to squeeze multiple positions out of you when there's no face-to-face intimidation. So even if literally everyone else has a remote option, you won't.
Another reason is that in most cases you are the one and only "real person" contact for customers/clients. It's not right, but your coworkers do have to option to dodge unexpected calls and visits and they need you to be instantly and constantly available to apologize for them take the brunt of all venting from people they want to avoid.
I know this sounds really bitter, but it's actually true of almost every company. If you find one that doesn't treat you that way, never leave.
True True
Ive been looking for over a year.
The pendulum has really swung back when it comes to remote work in general. I remember when business writers were going on about it being the way of the future. Now, for most people, the time we spent working remotely will be like this odd blip in our careers. There still are remote jobs, but the relatively small number just means the competition for them is intense.
I wonder that too. A lot of employers think that people can't work efficiently at home, I think. Or they think it'll be too much work to try and communicate tasks remotely? I feel like I'm MORE efficient at home, so I don't really understand it.
Same. I had a position that was remote and I killed it. Only reason I had to resign is I had to relocate and the state I moved to has crazy tax laws. I could get hired back but I have to live in a state specifically for them.

I think it depends on the sector. If it's one that might host a lot of clients meetings in house, the expectation is that someone will need to be on hand at least part of the time so fully remote isn't going to be an option. As for getting the ones that are actually fully remote and available, the pool of applicants is going to be so much greater because of the remote ability. So you're not competing with just people in the area, you are competing against your full country and sometimes even beyond that.
Well, from what I’m hearing finding any kind of remote job is pretty tough right now. But as far as administrative assistant, if the people we work for have to be in office, they expect us to be in office as well. It’s probably not necessary most of our jobs could be done remotely, but That is the society we are currently in.
