As a recruiter who has hired older experienced candidates, I have found if you place them with younger inexperienced employees, the older will show a better way of working through and the younger will typically help the older with the tech side that may be lacking. Obviously neither can have preconceived notions regarding others age.
You are absolutely correct 👏🏿
As the older expedited candidate, yes. We have a lot to offer.
I always go for the best fit for the job when I am hiring someone for my team. Age doesn't matter to me, experience does.
In my experience, the primary reason I may pass on a candidate, regardless of age, is their ability to keep up with the demands of the role. While I have interviewed and hired older candidates with impressive backgrounds, I’ve unfortunately also encountered challenges where strong résumés did not translate into effective performance on the ground. For example, I’ve seen instances where employees struggled with maintaining focus, staying engaged during long trainings, or confidently enforcing policies with the youth we serve.
In this field, consistency, alertness, and confidence in upholding rules are critical to maintaining both safety and program integrity. If an employee, whether older or younger, cannot remain attentive, is reluctant to enforce policies, or is intimidated by the population they are working with, it compromises the entire team’s ability to function effectively. At the end of the day, my priority is ensuring the well-being of staff and participants, and that means selecting candidates who demonstrate not only experience but also the energy, focus, and presence required to succeed in this environment.
I'm on manager #5 in my 8 1/2 yrs. My role is to be the "continuity player" and ensure I am helping the latest greatest manager to deliver and get promoted.
I wouldn't not hire an older experienced candidate.
Cost more, wrong culture fit for team?
Seniors have experience and it is highly value. It isn’t just a title. No one would want to work in a place were age and experience is used against you. It shows poor culture environment.
Bitterness. If an older person is still carrying a bad attitude from a previous job, I won't hire them. Candidates should always put their best foot forward, and that applies to anyone of any age.
You need experienced people who can make decisions on spot when asked and not go back to someone else to make the call.
