Would you bring it up with the partner if you (a 3rd year) were excluded from client calls despite working on a certain matter for 1+ year while a junior associate (1st-year) is invited to join them? I find it bizarre that I have to sit in the senior's office to listen to the call while the junior with much less experience on the matter is on the invite. And I handle follow-ups from said call...

If it happens multiple times in a row, maybe. If it happened once, no.

Who is responsible for taking notes? From a billing optics perspective, I probably would not have two junior people on the call. I often exclude my midlevels because they are more expensive and don’t have a specific role on the call because the junior is taking notes, then I follow up with the midlevel with their assignments. You’ve given me something to think about in terms of how the midlevel may view it.

People also forget, perhaps intentionally, that exclusion creates attorneys who are scribes and never able to run deals or understand strategic aspects of a transaction, leading to terminal associates and counsels. Lack of training and exposure to substance and executive presence.

Have you ever brought it up directly with the senior and do you know if it is intentional exclusion? If not, you could say something like… “I see I’m not getting the invites for the calls. I’ll let them know to keep copied unless there’s some reason I shouldn’t be.” If the senior says why, that’s more concrete context to work off of. But it could also just be an oversight that no one is saying anything about since they don’t know you’re bothered by it.

Probably a note taker. I don’t include all my associated on a call. I pick em for the call. If it’s a critical call for a workflow an associate is handling that one gets the call. If a random call to talk, junior gets it. If the associate is ready to negotiate, they get the call.

I wouldn’t worry about it that much. Unless the work stops coming your way. Also, sometimes, we just don’t know who was last on it so we grab the most recent one we remember lol

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. For those at free market firms, how frequently do you have to ask for work? How do you typically ask? Just send partners emails asking if they have any deals for you? Thanks y’all.

Tips for bankruptcy associates who eventually want to move in-house? 3rd year associate in bankruptcy/restructuring group doing mainly bk lit but a few deals too. Need to stay in BL for at least another year for the money, but eventually want to move in-house. The path to in-house seems more straightforward for general commercial lit or more standard transactional practices. Any tips for someone who’s practice is a bit of a hybrid (and who will never likely do discovery or handle a depo)

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Depending on how many people are there and how it feels, I was planning to stay an hour extra but should I hang around the office until later? First time visiting this city so it’d be great to take in some sights too (although that’s not a priority of course).

Do you think partners in law firms have too much power and autonomy? eg. the power to refuse leave, to do your annual appraisal, to make you work while on leave, to overwork people, to manage the team on their on terms etc. Is this power bad or good for the firm and the team overall?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
