Would you leave a lazy job that pays well ($165k TC) but you don’t find inspiring or see a future in for a challenging new job with a step back in pay ($135-145k) that puts you in an industry you love and see growth? I’m battling with the mindset of staying put to stack cash but ultimately remain bored/unhappy or make a move for something fun but not able to save as much for retirement.

Steady salary/ cash flow may make you feel secure. But in today’s market of layoffs, you never know how long it will take you to get back up on your feet if you were laid off. If it is not a significant financial impact, my suggestion would be to focus on building your skills by taking a step back. Most of us spend 8-10 hours at work. Working in a stimulating environment is lot more important than you think. It will keep you motivated and fulfilled up to certain extent.

You’re right. I’ve never been afraid of layoffs before joining Amazon. I don’t trust the company, despite them paying well. I think I need to choose to challenge myself and excel in what im passionate about

like

Depends on what you're doing and if you need the money or the motivation. I would be fine taking the lazy job for more pay so I can focus on other areas that are more fun and then change jobs when a great opportunity presents itself

like

I feel like this might be my great opportunity and I’ve spent enough time being lazy.

funny

Can you push them to get your comp closer to what you’re making now?

Do you explore/ do things outside of work that fulfill you?

like

Everyone I know that left Amazon. Was ok with taking a pay-cut . After two years of not having to pay back the bonus. Amazon worked them like work horses & now they both are extremely happy.

I am in the middle of this. Left a pretty cush gig, but I was there over 5 years and there was nowhere else I could really go (it is a role of one), I was at the high end on pay in my role, and the company was not investing in technology in the way I hoped.

But pay is not something that drives me much (and I know I will make it up in 2-3 years). I need the challenge and learning new things much more than that.

Trust your gut and what motivates you. If you're good, the money always makes its way to you.

I needed to hear this, thank you!

For me, personally, growth opportunities and passion for what I do or what the company I work for outweighs the compensation if the compensation is a livable amount of course.

Definitely a good position you're in, wishing you luck on whatever avenue you take!

like

If you can afford to take that cut, I have found happiness in what I do is important. I used to just think work was my life; love it or hate it, it is what it is. Not anymore. A younger Gen has shown me it's okay to look for what you love.

like

Hi!
Here’re my thoughts:
- think about how much money specifically do you want to save per year?
- plan your expenses around that and think what things you could potentially cut cost on?
- think about what you could potentially invest in to create more financial safety for yourself for the future (e.g. real estate)
- maybe you can also talk to someone who’s expert in finances, savings etc.? (a friend of mine is the Financial Coach, happy to put you in contact - feel free to message me/connect on LI)

Personally, I would not be able to go ahead spending 8hrs/day every day doing the work that doesn't fulfil me.

Wish you aaaaall the best with whatever you decide, you’ve got this :)

like

I really appreciate your thoughts and encouragement, and I agree I will need to think of ways to cut costs elsewhere but I shouldn’t sacrifice my goals

No advice- just want to say it’s an amazing position to be where you’re at right now! Rooting for you!

This is a personal question.

What stage are you in your life right now?

Single? Building experience?

Or senior with family?

Can you afford to take a step back?

If youre under 40 and single. Take the risk. You have plenty of time to recoup lost money for a couple of years. But regret in not chasing the thing you love wont go away.

Hi all, negotiating with HR on salary for a new AS position and want to know what’s fair. I was an AE for two years, took a promotion at another agency for SAE for only 8 months and am now being recruited for AS at 80k. All of my agencies have been large, I’ve worked on pharma and a large global account, I also started “managing” at the AE level due to my team’s structure. Is $80k fair? Thanks!
