Would you rather stay an associate or move to an of counsel role if the long term goal is partnership?

Unless moving to of counsel takes you out of the running for partner, I’d recommend of counsel. Once you get to a certain level of experience you need to shed the associate title.

Totally depends on the firm. Some firms have of counsel role on the partnership track. Others don’t.

like

Associate. Of Counsel is typically not partnership track.

like

At my current place, OC is on track and that track lasts three years. If you don’t make it in that time, or don’t want it, then senior counsel is where they put you (if they want to keep you I guess).

Help me please

At my firm, OC is still partnership track. I had the opportunity to move this year but chose to stay as an associate for lots of reasons. 1) billable hour requirement the same 2) I’m not realistically going up for shareholder this year, and will be forced into OC role next year because of years of practice so doesn’t matter 3) pay is basically the same because as an associate I have a defined bonus that gets me the same net pay whereas OC is discretionary and 4) most importantly for me, associates get work from other shareholders while OC is expected to have their own pipeline and I’m just not there yet.

like

Doesn’t usually matter, but you can hang as counsel longer.

I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research? I'm so bored and I want to quit but I don't know if I have unrealistic expectations.

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
