I used to think the same, but now I kinda get why they do it. A recruiter texted me after I missed their email and it actually helped me land the interview. If it’s done respectfully and followed up properly, I’m okay with it. But yeah, if it’s sloppy or pushy, it still feels off.
I don't think text messages are unprofessional in every case. It's all in the way they're used. If someone texts you a reminder, or they ask something after you've been in touch, that's not so bad. But it's true that scammers rely on text messages a lot, so it's good to be wary if a recruiter turns up in your texts uninvited.
For first contact? Legit organizations don't. Scammers do though.
No. candidates 'opt-in' for SMS or Text notifcation and contact.
Sometimes this is automatic if you dont uncheck the box.
If not provided the option of SMS, Email or Phone contact methods when applying for positions, then it is potentially unprofessional....but mainly lazy.
Honestly, it doesn't really bother me. I've been texting with a recruiter for a while now and I think they are friendly and professional, despite communicating through text. I probably wouldn't talk to anyone on WhatsApp, Signal, or those other types of apps though.
Previous work as Talent Acquisitions, most people have their voicemails full. I've had better results sending text messages.
