Yesterday was supposed to be my first real day off in weeks, but one quick email turned into a three-hour drafting spiral. I blinked and suddenly my day off was gone. I can’t even remember the last time a Saturday or Sunday felt like actual rest instead of waiting for the next fire drill to hit my inbox. I’m starting to wonder if this is baked into the job or if we’ve all forgotten how to protect our own time. How do you handle PTO without letting work bleed into everything?

You have to take charge. To remain in good health, everyone needs at least one day of sabbath rest IMHO. You put an out of office on. You advise people in advance if you have to. If you don’t protect yourself, no one will. You are teaching people how to treat you.

Take vacations where you will be wholly offline. I have a lake cabin that has cell signal at the top of the hill, and no wifi. It’s a lovely place to recharge.

When you say that you’re not available, mean it! You may need to prepare the staff a couple of weeks in advance of your pending absence. Remind them again a couple of days before you leave. Then as A1 said, put an “out of office” in place.

I’ve said this before and will say it as many times as it takes: I’m in-house, I hire outside counsel. I want fresh, rested lawyers who have given their brain time to rest so it can be more genius for me, dig into my issue with me, come up with amazing, innovative solutions. I don’t want fried, exhausted, burnt-out attorneys. They just aren’t nearly as good. They’re less creative, they’re more snippy, more likely to get condescending, can’t tolerate being questioned...Not good.

The science is very clear that human brains don’t function as well at that point. And the data is also very clear about the incredibly toxic impacts on the legal profession: very high rates of addiction and substance abuse, high rates of suicide and mental health issues, etc. We are such a talented group. We have got to move past this “work martyr”/abusive overwork hazing nonsense (“I work/ed like this so you should”).

To the original poster: I know you are in a tough spot. I so feel you, and the resulting resentment. I have been there. As much as it stinks, it is a line you will need to draw. Stop checking email on vacation. Try making a deal with a fellow associate that you will cover each other while on PTO. If the folks you work for are really hostile to vacation/unplugging, try having a confidential convo with a partner you consider a mentor or HR. If this doesn’t change, seriously consider a different firm or come in-house. I hate that as an answer but what you are facing is unsustainable. At a minimum, hopefully hearing that you are right to be perturbed about this is helpful. Keep following your instincts, you will figure this out.
Wishing you the very best!

Is SEO a lost game for a startup? I read a new perspective arguing that for SMEs, competing on SEO is a long and constant fight against the algorithm. Bigger companies have the specialists and budget to undertake the challenges but for new companies, it is much harder. I also read that content marketing should focus more on thought leadership and creating a community of followers.

Anyone here know of a wholesaler that supplies bottles like this? I've checked Alibaba, Thomasnet, and various other sites, but not much luck. I can't currently fulfill anything above 500 bottles and most suppliers I've come across have a minimum of 1000 or more. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am a new (lateral) associate at a small firm where everyone currently works from the office. When I started, I wasn’t told specific firm hours. I’ve tried to figure out when to come and go based upon when the partners arrive and leave, but their schedules are very inconsistent. The other associates don’t have helpful guidance for me. Assuming that if I ask the partners they’ll say to use my discretion, what are reasonable hours to keep?
