I usually step away from the situation to gather my thoughts and take a deep breath. I remind myself that it was just a bad moment and I won’t let it ruin my day. Difficult interactions don’t have to steal your joy.
I don't really. I just push through and hope the next customer isn't also terrible. Some shifts just suck and all you can do is try to ride them out with some of your sanity still intact.
Go have a few minutes to yourself, if you have customers go have a chat with them! They usually help!

It’s true, the vibe shifts fast. I usually take a few deep breaths, focus on small wins, or chat with a teammate for a quick mood boost. Even tiny resets can make the rest of the shift feel lighter.
Impossible attitude is contagious, too it can go from one peeved Cook to staff wide breakdown in civility and communication. Teamwork is a fragile thing and it's often long gone before you even realize it's been eroding. Tricky, especially in kitchens where everyone's yelling at each other anyway. I think passive aggression is most commonly used in response to perceived slights or general malaise at work. It's pretty easy to tell when someone is trying to make a whole room as miserable as they are. I usually tell this person the most inappropriate joke I can think of as soon as I can get them alone. This is a team building exercise far superior to simply asking "what's wrong". Even if not found funny, if the attempt is genuine it will be appreciated. Don't let someone throw pots in the sink and slam cutting boards all night. The guy pitching a hissy all over the kitchen is always ridiculous and usually just needs it pointed out by someone who's opinion they value. It's thankless work that pays nothing and offers no social mobility whatsoever, your gonna get angry people. Leaving that anger at the door is the only way you escape with your sanity. You can taste despair in a dish same as you can taste love.

Sometimes the reset is as small as stepping off the floor for two minutes and reminding yourself that one bad interaction isn’t the whole day. You can’t erase it, but you can stop it from stacking. The mental reset matters as much as the physical one.

I always give myself grace to be frustrated for at least a little while. Then I tell myself that it’s temporary and that I won’t let it ruin my entire day.
