Good for you for stepping away! I’ve thought about it too, especially when I catch myself doomscrolling. But then I wonder if I’d miss out on the good parts, like the communities I’ve joined. It’s such a tough balance.
I haven't participated on Facebook in at least five years, maybe more. I still have the account just because it's the only contact information I have with some people I knew years ago. I've avoided deleting the account just because that would be like throwing out an old rolodex.
It’s a really tough choice to do it now however much I want to because the value it provides me today is irreplaceable. 3 big things - 1) My local buy nothing group and Facebook marketplace are really helping me be the kind of conscious consumer I want to be. 2) My local community groups have been super helpful in so many ways - from finding a home cook, to getting restaurant recommendations, and making local friends (in the absence of physical community spaces I think local area groups have stepped in). And finally 3) I’m part of a couple of niche interest groups and communities that have been extremely enriching to my life.
These may not be the original use cases for Facebook but this is how I’m drawing value from it and honestly nothing else comes close to replacing this today.
I think our feelings about social media are often times a reflection of how we are feeling in general, and when things are out of balance, social media for many can exacerbate that gap making you feel more imbalanced. In contrast, when you look at it with half an eye, paying it only a little attention and recognizing most are inflating details/showing only the good stuff, then I think there’s a lesser chance of a negative reaction with the platforms.
