Discussing another firm's merger with my own and another partner said, "that firm (the merging firm) was shopped, and that's all I want to say about that." What does "shopped" mean in this context? He obviously didn't want to keep talking about it so I didn't ask in the moment, but not knowing is bugging me. Anyone know?

Just got my life insurance trust set up and my life insurance policy is being finalized soon. I am extremely confused about the annual Crummey Power letter that I need to send around. Can someone please help me figure this out? In my trust:

Grantor = me
Trustees = My wife and sister in law
Holders = my children and any of their issue (my children are toddler and infant).

To whom do I send (a) Crummey Notice and (b) Acknowledgment of Notice of Withdrawal Rights? I understand it……..

1st year associate (NY) thinking about lateraling into a large insurance defense firm from Municipal work/L&E, pay jump 75 to 125 and hybrid as opposed to fully in office. Basically is the pay jump/hybrid worth giving up current practice area to ID? If it turns out I hate ID, thoughts on leveraging the litigation experience and substantive knowledge of L&E to then lateral again within 2 years?

How do you know when you deserve a raise? I’ve been working as a real estate closing attorney for 4 months making 80k in Atlanta GA. With rising rent prices and what not I feel like I could really use a raise, besides that I do good work. Part of me feels like I just need to be grateful that I have a job and then another part of me doesn’t want to fall into the trap of undervaluing myself.

Will the discourse be as hot on here once (hopefully not if) COVID ends? Surely lawyers have other things to argue about!

My company just rolled out a COVID Survey and indicated the following clause.
The completion of the US COVID-19 Vaccination Status Survey is a baseline requirement to be fully eligible for year-end rewards that you would otherwise receive. Failure to fulfill this requirement will result in a 10% decrease to any base pay increase and to any variable pay award (where applicable), submitted for you as part of year-end reward decisions.

Hi! I am in the beginning of my law career, currently working for government. But I am not sure where life will take me next. So my question is: how important do you think it is to develop your social media brand and presence as legal professional at the start of your career? Would it be beneficial to start marketing myself in some general way, and then get more specialized? Curious how typical it is to feel extreme imposter syndrome as a 1st year...I’m a few weeks in at a biglaw firm and for the first time in my life I feel like everyone else is running laps around me...I’m not getting a lot of work but I’m second-guessing myself on nearly everything I do...is this normal?

My firm has a 9-year partnership track as of a year or two ago. It has grown quickly from 5 to 7 to 9 in the past 10 or so years. In the written document that sets out the criteria for partnership, it basically says that your billable hours need to go up every year. Our minimum is 1900. I’m wondering how normal this increasing billables requirement is? I am torn between thinking it’s sensible and thinking it’s another example of law firms treating associates like machines.

How often are you looking for cases that not only state the law you are looking for, but also come out in your favor.

I'm looking for cases to defend a punitive damages SJ motion that I know I'm going to lose, and I'm trying to find a case that states the quotation I'm looking for, but they all then go on to dismiss punitive damages.

Sometimes I wish when you were with a partner, there was a very clear sign that the person doesn’t love you so that you know it’s time to walk away. I filed an ethics complaint in early June, and after going up the chain and calling out nothing was done on it, and I was being gaslighted/my personal life being used to show I am the problem in early October, I met with the execs in Ethics. The initial meeting, they gaslighted me, and then tone was better in the second meeting. Now 2-3 weeks later, General Counsel wants to see me. What should I do? Should I be worried? I have sought counsel outside of the company. This is huge fintech company.
