Given all the recent buzz about expected large raises around the big 4, I’d like to level set on the average salary for a 4th/5th year female senior manager in federal tax ( credits & methods group) in the Midwest - Chicago/Minneapolis/Detroit market. Anyone willing to share a range if they work in a similar area of tax / similar level? I recognize all groups vary greatly in salary expectations, so looking for input specific to my area. Current expectations set at 140-160k. Reasonable?

It’s better to know the truth sooner rather than later.

That feels really low to me. I’m a female manager 3 in tax (different SSL) in a pretty LCOL city in the Midwest and that’s where I expect to be upon promotion to Sr Mgr this year based on where I’m at currently.

like

Sad that in a HCOL area a 5th year sr. Manager expects 150k. Big 4 is abysmal.

like

EY2, do you have a law degree? Is the SSL very specialized?

Since October of 2019 our salary has increased 2%, employees have gone down, work has gone up, and firm performance is up. So, yes.

140k - 160k would be SM1-SM3 ... for SM4 - SM5 , it would be 175k - 210k

like

I think that’s reasonable. 1 year behind you and slightly below your range at the moment, so I’m expecting the raise to push me into it.

That is reasonable compared to where I was at in this market

That seems very low. Perhaps different by firm.

In the same group. This is about right , maybe a slight bit lower than what I would expect the range to be. However, I've always felt underpaid in the role but holding on until MD to see what those $$'s are...

Has anyone who's worked in HR, Finance, or another role with visibility to compensation information been able to use that as leverage for salary negotiations?

To put it bluntly, I know certain people with less experience and a lower performance rating are getting paid more than me due to my role working with payroll data. I suspect this was due to the fact that I did not counter offer when I accepted this role, which was a few months ago, and now I regret it.

Every time I speak to my director (at least twice a week), he works in how he is getting older into the conversation(humorously). For instance, he forgot something non-work related, said “sign of old age”. He recently told a story, said, this is how old people talk. He likes to come across as a grandfatherly figure, but I’m not sure what to say in these encounters. It is always an innocent, non work related context. Have you guys experienced this ? I like my current job, company and public accounting. I know I am being underpaid at $70k as a senior tax associate with 2-3 years of experience as I have talked with my local peers as well as local recruiters. Also, I know outside hires to my company get paid about $5-$10k higher than me, but they don’t get a raise the following year. My question is what is everyone’s experience with company hopping to get a pay bump within public accounting?
