5 years into PA. I used to absolutely LOVE my job. Now I’m so burnt out I‘m finding myself not caring anymore which oddly I’m getting great evals on my work but I‘m just not interested in the grind anymore. Post busy season managers/partners still hustle you as if you’re in busy season. Do you ever regain your love for auditing again lol? How do you get over this burnt out feeling?

For me having a kid helped with motivation. Now I have to do it for his future. Fantasies of running away to a cheap foreign country or living in a van by the river don’t hit like they used to.

You guys can find significant others? :(

I wish I could help but the job responsibilities change as you move up. I was motivated and excited as a senior but once I was promoted to manager, administrative tasks took so much of my time. I wasn’t actually auditing anymore and I was burnt out too.

I hit my breaking point in my 8th year. As has been the case with most others in this thread, the grind started to wear me down.

As my firm went from top 25 to top 20, the work continued to pile up and it felt like there was no true break from busy season.

While there was a “lull” in June and July, it was short lived, and at the manager level there was growing pressure to work on business development, recruiting, training, etc.

I just never bought into the underlying product we were selling: a clean audit opinion cobbled together by the efforts of 22 year olds. It just wasn’t fulfilling anymore.
Not to mention, the time I lost out on with my family was making me miserable.

I’m in industry (just started last month) now at a midsize public company. Much better hours, same pay, and the organization has a mission/vision that I can get behind and am proud of. Solid group of people too.

I just quit to do something else. I was in the grind 9 busy seasons. I can’t do it anymore.

You might just require time off. But real time-off. No checking laptop, emails, etc. And if possible take a month off/Sabbatical.

You've outgrown it. Happened to me.

This is the realization I came to as well. I just outgrown it. After years of re-advising the same info, it became nonsense. Still receiving great evals too but I’m going through the motions atp. I miss statement prep. I’ll come back to audit or not.

I'm at almost 10 years and am in the same boat as you honestly. I feel like the documentation requirements have gotten worse too since I started and that's been a drag. Thank you SAS 145 among other things.

I never love audit. Cliché as it is, the main highlight of this job for me is the people I work with. Also the ability to do the job however I want as long as I get the job done.

You know theres many jobs like that with normal 40-50 hr weeks all year round?

I have ebbs and flows. It helps to focus on the positives of this career (flexibility, being able to have a say in how/what you do, etc.). I lay off the gas when it’s a slow time and I’m not feeling motivated. Once I catch my breath I seem to get enough motivation to keep on top of projects until the next busy season hits and I get into the grind again.

I am a Senior Manager of Software Engineering and lead architect at a small company (was a startup with < 10 employees when I joined, now has > 50). I am the most senior technical person in the company (we don't have a CTO, I report to the COO), even though I only have 4.5 YOE. By God's grace I have been able to succeed in the role, but feel that I am underpaid and would like your input.
