9th year associate. In general I’m doing well but I’m tired. I’ve been told I’m in partner track but obviously it’s all subject to change. Is now a good time to look at in-house opportunities?

I suspect the best time was two years ago, but the second best time is now.

like

Best time was probably more like 4-5 years ago.

like

Ignore all the folks saying your time has passed. Skill is skill and if a team wants it, they will buy it.

But here is the thing. Yeah, you’re tired. Are you quitting bc you’re tired? That’s a bad move. If you legit want to be in house and check it out - cool. Plenty of partners go in house too.

It’s a good title to have. You earned it. And even if you leave, no one can take it from you.

If you’re up for partner this yr of next, just stick it out

like

A2 obviously it’s not automatic lol that would be insane. But yes that’s when people first start making it.

Everyone that remains is on track at an up or out firm.

like

Only a handful of firms are truly up or out anymore. If the firm doesn’t push you out when they decide you’re not going to make partner, that’s not up or out.

like

Best time is 4-6 year range. Gets much harder at 8. I would move quickly. You will have tough competition from folks who spent four years learning a different fuction

Lateral that just went through first bonus season with the firm. Not in a major market but workload is comparable to major markets. Surprised at how low the bonus was. I received solid reviews and my annualized hours were well above the requirement. Should I approach anyone about this? Wondering if it is worth addressing or if it could compromise my standing. Thanks in advance!

My time entries are chaotic and rereading at the end of the month I feel like the time was totally justified but also like wow it sounds like we were jumping all over the place and we were, lol time entries were not your typical sequential one step at a time thing.

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Depending on how many people are there and how it feels, I was planning to stay an hour extra but should I hang around the office until later? First time visiting this city so it’d be great to take in some sights too (although that’s not a priority of course).

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

How much actual court experience should a junior litigator expect to get in the first year? I've been my firm 6 months as a civil litigator not and have yet to go to a hearing. There have been a few (all relatively minor) but each time the partner tells me it's not important enough for me to attend. As a junior, I feel like I need to learn and no hearing is to minor. How else am I supposed to learn?
