A few months ago, I got what looked like an email from a multinational company, it even had my name and matched a role I had applied for earlier. After two weeks of interviews and tasks, they told me to purchase a new laptop because mine did not meet their standards. That is when I realized it was a scam. It was frustrating, but also a reminder of how convincing job phishing has become. Have you ever come across a job offer that seemed too real to be fake?

You really can't be too careful. If you get something unsolicited there's a pretty good chance it's a scam. One huge clue is that things will just be too easy, the scammers hurry up to offer jobs to people. The sooner they can get their hands on someone's financial info the better it is for them. A common one is the "fake check scam," if you Google that phrase you'll get an idea of how common it is.

I just discovered that now, thanks mate

When they sound too good to be true, I go to Reddit or Quora and type in the so called company's name, job description or other identifying factors in the search bar. There are so many scams that have detailed descriptions from hundreds of people on those platforms.

like

Noted. I never thought of this, because Google was my go-to search bar

Usually the fake ones are really fake, but I had a semi real looking one for Nike come my way. Didn’t end up applying though as the email address it came from was a giveaway.

like

I detected one earlier this month. The recruiter identified himself as Mr John, and ended up making a typo error in his pronoun (her) lols. The company never existed

That sounds so frustrating, and sadly it’s becoming more common. These scams are getting harder to spot, especially when they mimic real companies. Your experience is a good reminder for everyone to stay cautious.

Thanks Mate. Please stay safe

Wow ! That is a new one for me but not at all surprising. I am sorry you had to go through that. It sucks to find out its a scam.

In the past I’ve wrongly thought that forgiveness brings restoration of relationships. But reconciliation requires everyone involved to respond -which is beyond our control. Forgiveness says I’m canceling that debt- it’s my marker & I’m tearing it up. I’m putting myself in Gods hands -Justice comes from Him. We mistakenly think that forgiveness is weakness as if we just capitulated. Forgiveness isn’t a sign of weakness- It takes strength to forgive. God tells us to forgive.

Hi. I have applied for a job in an academic setting for a leadership role in cancer research. Duties would have me responsible for a small team of research nurses as well as other managerial duties for the department. I have been a research nurse for 3 years now, but I have no experience applying for a salaried position or a role in leadership. What sort of salary would be appropriate to ask for? I know that I should aim high and let them counter, but how high exactly? Thanks I’m advance

Also posted over in tech bowl. Looking for advice on whether pursue a CS degree. I’m an older guy shifting to SWE. I finished bootcamp last May & about to start my first jr role at Oracle OCI. Late 30’s with a couple of kids. Is it worth it for me to seek a CS degree at this time/soonish? I’m not afraid of the extra work, and would go part time. Wondering if the eventual payoff would worth the effort. Will I level up quicker? Employer has partial tuition reimb.

We are looking to hire a FTE for systems integration. We are using Mulesoft as an IPAAS. I’m part of the hiring team. The pay is 6 figures it is fully remote, the benefits are insanely good and it can be your second job if you are very good. If you are great, it’s probably 15-20 hours of work per weeks. If you are good enough, I will even cover for you to coordinate with your primary job. DM me if you are interested as I’m tired of the crappy recruiting company we are contracted with.

Should I leave my first permanent job as a team leader of 4 DPs in a FMCG business (only been there for 4 months) to join a huge Tech business for a 12months contract?

They offer me 60% more money than my permanent role. Circa 2000 dollars every month in my pocket

However, I am worried if I accept the tech role and I do not become permanent I will be looking again for a job in 12-24 months and my CV won't be showing a managerial position. Won't be showing any progress.

How does contract to hire work? If I’m offered $37/hr on w2 for 3 months and then possibly a permanent position, how much can I expect to get annually as a full time company employee as a BI data analyst II? I have a M.S. and certificates in DA but this will be my first job as DA.
I prefer working for what is offered on contract without negotiating, and then negotiate when I transition into the company itself so I have a better chance of getting the contract position and show my skills.
