Go direct. If it goes through the recruiter, the firm has to pay the recruiter a fee.
I found out a position at the firm I’m currently at from a recruiter but then applied directly. Because I didn’t use a recruiter I managed to get a six figure signing bonus.
I just got a candidate a 400k signing bonus. Anecdotes can go both ways
There isn’t a public job posting to apply to so I’d have to just send in my resume directly to the founding partner I know best and say I heard about the opening from their outside recruiter. Does that change anything?
Recruiter here. I have been doing this for over 30 years.
If a recruiter brought you the opportunity first and you go around them, that will not land well internally. It often gets back to recruiting and the hiring team, and it can reflect on your judgment.
More importantly, the assumption that you are better off without a recruiter is usually wrong at this level.
A good recruiter is not just forwarding a resume. We are running point on the entire process. That means:
getting you in front of the right people and keeping the process moving
providing candid, real-time feedback that you would not otherwise receive
preparing you for specific partners, teams, and interview dynamics
advising you on how to position your experience so it matches what the firm actually needs
negotiating compensation based on real data points from prior lateral hires, including signing bonuses and structure
acting as a buffer so you are not chasing the firm for updates or putting yourself in an awkward position
If you go direct, you lose that layer. You are largely operating without visibility and without leverage.
Also, at firms that use recruiters, the fee is already built into their hiring model. Your compensation is driven by your value, not by whether a recruiter is involved.
If you already know the partners, that is helpful. Use that to strengthen your candidacy within the process. The cleanest and most effective approach is to let the recruiter manage the process and use your relationships where they add value.
