It's the plan that is missing, IMO. It's very similar to what M1 said. But I'm in a similar situation, but married with kids. Long hours, trips, but north of 600k comp. It's always setting a goal and working towards that. Having x in savings and getting out, being aggressive but not ridiculous, and adding a timer, too. This money or this time. Whatever comes first. That has helped me, and I know that I have 7 years left in my case at max.
Lots of considerations. How long have you been at this job? What are your annual expenses? Any debt? What are your life’s goals and is this impacting that? Do you plan to retire early or see yourself continue wanting to work? Could you find a way to make the job less stressful?
I think a stressful job will age you fast. I would not hang on for more than a few years. If I’m reading this right you make $500k+. If I were you I’d set a goal of building a portfolio of $X and then gtfo. At some point more money doesn’t matter and you should prioritize your life
…to get through the days. I feel like I am not doing something that I enjoy or am even naturally good at - and I do not care about the work enough to become truly excellent. I think the people leaving has been really hard for me, particularly the recent departures, but my fear of financial insecurity and the opportunity cost of doing something else is making me stay here. When it’s busy it is also truly toxic, but when it is not busy the pay is very volatile. Would appreciate your thoughts as strangers even if it’s a shake in the shoulders
Don’t get addicted to the promise of more and more money.
Lay out your short, medium, and long term personal goals. When do you want to start a family? If you’re single, do you have enough time to build a romantic relationship to get to the goal of family? Work backwards from family (if that’s a goal).
Seek therapy and a career coach. You can afford both.
Are there more skills you need to gain from this job before you exit?
Can you take an unpaid leave of absence to think? (You sound depressed - this can be short term disability for anxiety).
Lastly, yes, shake yourself!!! You are quite wealthy and throwing money at some of these questions and problems WILL help. You got this.
I know someone who was in this exact same spot. Decided to live a mostly FIRE lifestyle, bought and is rehabbing a vineyard and plans to retire at 40.
At first, I thought you were gloating, but then I believe you are struggling. Here’s the deal, you have to give up something to make it work either you give up your nice comp or consider that the pain and suffering is a part of why they’re paying you this muchabove people with similar years of experience
I feel somewhat similar. I feel like im watching the titanic going towards the iceberg pretty much all the time but very little i can do to steer it. Don't make that kind of cash but not bad either. I am the main bread winner and have concerns pver the long term.
Long term, I dont mind the actual work, but would rather go back to an IC role, and work for the next 20 years, but i fear for the future. What my kids are going to make it, what happens when im no longer here and my wife needs to make ends meet. Its probably a better position than the alternative but I feel that the more you have the more you stress over losing what you already have.
What are the hours? I was doing 60-80 hrs consistently for 2 years for less comp but enough to stay before I said fk it
Grass is always greener on the other side. Live like a monk then retire early.
How are you a VP with 5 years of experience????
