I love you
The audience doesn't really care anymore. Nobody is asking for better/more advertising. Everyone wants less ads
What makes an ad good where people want to watch it multiple times?
BUT it’s not ad men fault entirely..clients and the transactional, shallow people they recruit in marketing and marketing sourcing, finance etc..that has the largest impact. I’ve been on both sides for over 30years and I can surely be assertive on this.
Brands don’t want human truths anymore. They want data-backed insights and feel-good platitudes. Everything “elevates the everyday” and “promotes self-expression.” Neither of these stand out or connect with the audience at large. Why? Because it’s safe.
You get what you measure, and you tend to value what *can* be measured. The decision of the biggest companies in marketing (not holding companies, but Meta, Google, etc) to prioritize questionable numerical metrics and spend insane amounts of money evangelizing them, is what’s ruined a focus on quality or strategy. It’s not like we decided as an industry to get worse. It’s the ad companies that masquerade as tech companies but also have near zero appreciation for ideas or art or beauty that have pushed us here, imo.

This isn’t a new development, though. Definitely getting worse, mind you. But not new. We’ve been heading here for a good while
Problem nailed. Well said.
I agree with Producer 1. Who watches ads anymore? I leave the room or if it is online mute them.
So true, but I feel it’s pretty much always been that way. It’s sad, soulless work at its core.
I dunno. Most advertising has always been intrusive and for the most part, not that smart or well crafted. I agree that we are missing that 5% of truly great work though.
