Am I just broken from years of billable hour targets? I finally made the jump from audit to a role at a mid-sized manufacturing company, and the culture shock is real. In public, I was used to 80-hour weeks for three months and then a summer chill that still involved 40 hours. Here, the month-end close is a four-day sprint of pure chaos followed by three weeks of basically just staring at my inbox. I’m grateful for the downtime, but I feel like I’m losing my edge or that I should be doing more to justify my salary.

If you feel guilty about your salary you could find another position that would keep you busier. Or it's possible you could try to arrange things so your work isn't quite so uneven. There must be a way to balance your work better than three weeks of nothing followed by a frenzy.

This is really common when you come from a place of being overworked. Enjoy the downtime and treat it as rest before the storm.

Consider finding efficiencies in your department to eliminate roles and absorb the remaining portion of the role and salary.

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)
