Any advice for someone whose supervisors set a meeting tomorrow “to talk about some feedback we’ve been getting on your work” and you know it’s about missing internal deadlines? I was a late ADHD diagnosis and deadlines have always been really hard for me, especially internal ones. And I’ve been having a rough month due to some personal family stuff and everything in the news.

You need to get back on track or you’re in danger of being let go. The good news is that this is a proactive step by everyone to address the problem. They could have just canned you. (Its still possible, but no one does that on a Thursday)

This is your first and only strike. You can say you’ve had some family personal issues. Do NOT mention your distress at the shredding of the rule of law and wholesale murder of fellow citizens. Deeply troubling as it is, it has zero to do with your work performance. If you’re unable to do good work unless the Administration stops being anything but a nightmare, you are effectively giving your notice.

So, to prep for your meeting tomorrow you need to acknowledge the problem and present some solutions. To provide advice, we need to know what actually is your problem? Is it not knowing when things are due? Under-estimating how long things take? Trouble following up with 3rd parties to get needed info? Sloppy work? Poor research?

Adding to A1’s advice, I email a weekly status report to my boss at the same time every single week. It’s for updates, to get feedback, or their approval on a plan (I’ll color-code it if action is needed). While it’s not needed, I sold it as part of my process, given I have a very high volume of matters. If your boss ain’t great at always looping you in, it helps prevent wasted work.

Bonus you can do if you’re disclosing or have a NT boss: I told mine to hold my feet to the fire if I don’t send the update by X. Additionally, I have my boss periodically and randomly have me send a draft of a matter in its current state. That will guarantee progress and prevent you from cheating and fibbing.

Do they know about your adhd? If not, disclose it and request accommodations. What are you doing to track deadlines?

Internal deadlines are great if: you calendar time in your day to do them, and if completion of your daily tasks lets you go home

How have you combated your fear of rejection? I fixate on such small things as when my friends, for example, reject plans I have made. This definitely makes me more averse to putting myself out there and makes me ruminate on past perceived failures, which are clearly not good for personal growth

I have a student who only comes to school two days a week and then only for 1 hour. He tells me I have to pass him so it doesn't matter. This is very frustrating. What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. It’s something I actively work on, but I still have no concrete sense of how long I should spend on basic tasks (e.g., drafting a motion to dismiss). My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.
