It's always been dependant on the recruiter. I've left jobs with nothing else lined up even before the pandemic, and as long as I could decently speak to why I had a gap/what I was doing during that time, very few recruiters/hiring managers batted an eye. I'm sure there were plenty that just rejected my resume for this reason but it's never hindered my job search.
Same thing still applies, there are just more people with gaps than there were before. Some recruiters care, others don't.
Definitely be prepared to explain it though. They'll ask whether or not they personally see it as a "red flag"
I think given the increase in freelancing due to the client shift towards projects instead of AOR assignments, gaps are more understandable. Just need to indicate on your resume the experiences that are freelance/contract . With that said , you do need to show some full time experience (2-3 years )for stability and credibility
I think Covid changed all of that. People have different priorities and so-called "job hopping" is viewed differently than it once was. And that's coming from someone who took a decent amount of time off between jobs prior to the pandemic. If you're qualified enough, you should be given a chance to explain the reasoning behind any gaps on your resume.
I spent a little over a year in a few agencies of late. One agency I never met a single person in person before I quit. Only recently had a potential agency had a concern about it but my recruiter replied with a “it was during Covid” response.
I find it ironic that an agency would care how long you’d stay but have no qualms in letting you go if needed.
Loyalty isn’t cheap. It is earned. If you have the right leadership and work offerings to retain people, then more power too you. I can promise I’ll work hard for you as long as you pay me fairly and treat me well.
