I love this so much!
Personally I wasn’t a fan of the extra-biblical story elements, but I respect the show for what it is and how it’s been able to reach non-Christians and Christians alike
Fair enough. My favorite has been their uncanny ability to allow for scriptural dialogue without it feeling forced or awkward.
I’ve heard nothing but good things about it, but I’m always a little uncomfortable with stories “based on” scripture since it can’t possibly be 100% accurate. It’s obviously very dangerous for people to rely on fictionalized versions of God’s word rather than the Bible itself, and I don’t think that’s ever the intent. Well, I suppose in some cases it is the intent, but I don’t believe that the creators of The Chosen intend for it to usurp the authority of the Bible. I just worry that new believers and even those of us who have studied diligently might unconsciously visualize the fictional version when reading scripture. That’s not necessarily a bad thing I guess, but it’s something that makes me feel uncomfortable. It’s hard enough for believers living in the 20th century to try to disregard our own culture, the norms we are comfortable with secularly and in our churches, to try to understand the Bible in its original context. In some ways this show may help us to bridge that gap, but it could at the same time be adding new details/info into our brains that distract from the plain text of the account. I’m not against The Chosen at all, just cautious.
