3 years experience is still a junior role but not entry level. If you can get a consulting gig at McKinsey, then I am sure you have the ability to rebrand your experience and tailor your resume to align with a product manager role. If you don’t try you will never know.

What’s your experience pre Mck?

If it’s nothing, I’d just focus on Strat Ops / BizOps role that are product adjacent and move internally. If you’re really dead set on product, focus on early stage startups or industries outside of tech and be prepared for a pay cut.

No chance big tech is taking a chance on you for product roles, consulting and product ads different and you have very little experience (No offense just trying to be honest with you)

appreciate the honesty! prior to mckinsey full time/ whilst in college, i had 2 internships at mckinsey and one at a large tech company

It's a horrible time for career pivots from everything I've seen. I think if you are patient though, you'll be able to land something. I might start with some PM training courses and trying to find some side projects to gain some training and experience.

like

thank you so much! appreciate the advice

I would keep with it and keep getting that experience. 1 to 3 months is really not that much and probably won't make you super competitive in this economy. Just keep working on experience and credentials and building your skills for now.

like

thanks i meant 1 year and 3 months of full time experience— began full time at mckinsey aug 2024

I’d say get some certs in product management, and then take some other courses. It’s hard to pivot into a new role like you said, unless you find roles that are specifically labeled entry level

Spend another 2.75 years at McKinsey. Honestly you’re nuts to leave that org - enough years there and you write your own ticket.

How do referrals work?
If I get a referral from someone and I apply, then can I still reach out to a recruiter on LinkedIn expressing interest in the role? And do I let them know that I already applied? I’m sure they get tons of messages so I want to write something that won’t be overlooked. Any advice is appreciated:)
