Midsize private firm: Criminal, PI, and Family Law Depts. No body talks about their pay rates but rumor mill pins the highest paid dept is PI, with 2nd Criminal and coming in last Family Law. The Attorneys profit share salaries while paralegals and support staff are paid hourly. There are talks of year end bonuses for each dept but how and what those bonuses are based on Nobody knows for sure. It’s all so mysterious and subject to favoritism. How are the paralegals in your department organized/structured? What are the pros and cons? We’re exploring the idea of a paralegal center of excellence. Currently paralegals are reporting to the lawyers they support. The disadvantages are that the paralegals are siloed, so there’s no back-up if they’re out and they don’t have anyone who can support them if their work gets too busy. Additionally, the lawyers have a hard time accurately evaluating them since they can’t easily compare their work.

So general question I need to “translate” business speak into plain English. I have had 2 bosses now say they want me to ask more questions. I tend to be solution and Collaboration oriented and like to jump in. My problem is asking questions is hard because I have adhd and I’m trying to concentrate my focus on getting the information I need out of the conversation. So what kind of questions should I be asking? She saying I need to gain perspective on projects? Or. Please help.

Part of a large firm which is fairly hierarchical and am fairly junior in tenure. Feel like I don’t actually like any of my “superiors” and most of them have a very divergent views of what life is (given how much they want to work and how often they prioritize work). I like the work, I’m just tired of being exhausted by internal senior stakeholders and their never ending demands. Is industry the right place to look for some sense of reasonability?
