At the first agency I worked at, I befriended a senior creative who was ultimately laid off after a couple years. We kind of lost touch until he found me on LinkedIn years later, and at this point I had surpassed him in the industry. He sent me a message saying that he was looking for work and I gave him a TON of leads and even directly connected him to an old CD of mine. I eventually had to block the guy after a few years. He couldn’t hold a job and would message me out of the blue asking for leads or advice, and then would either shoot down the advice, reject the lead, or send me paragraphs about how terrible the job market or industry was 😵💫. Like, really really negative stuff. He was absolutely exhausting.
Wow. I’ve had periods of unemployment between gigs, but I hope I’ve never been that insufferable.
Not saying it’s a trend but… I’ve met a lot more men like this than women…
That may be so, but wouldn’t that stigma make them want to be more employable though? Rather than just complain and pass up opportunities?
This person recently moved back to their home state which has a crappy job market even when the economy is good. Am I being a jerk to not want to reach out anymore?
You have tried your best, you can’t pour from an empty cup and especially not into one with a giant hole.
A favorite quote of mine from mad men is that this is an industry of sadists and masochists, you know which one you are.
I don’t know if there’s some official term for it.. but there is a type of person who loves to endlessly complain, and never take anyone’s help. There’s an excuse for every little thing that may help them along the way. They love being a victim, and will never come out of it. Have to just give them advice if they want it then walk away because they’ll never heed anything you say.
