Istanbul is an incredible city with tons to see - definitely visit the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Suleyman Mosque, Chora Church, Galata Tower, the basilica cistern, the Grand Bazaar, and the hammam at the Kilik Ali Pasa mosque (don’t need to be Muslim for any of these - I’m not). I’m sure there’s much more, but those are highlights I remember. There was also a hip neighborhood called Moda that I liked.
Again, probably more out there, but I also liked Cappadocia, Ephesus, Izmir, and Cesme
When do you plan to go? Depending on what you want to do, Turkey offers a lot of option. If going in summer, beaches can be fun. Antalya or Bodrum. Istanbul for couple of days. If you are a history person ephesus, Troy etc. are good. Cappadocia offers great geographical formations and hot air ballooning.
Pro tip - keep arrival and departure from different cities if possible. This will save you some time and a domestic flight or two. Search this bowl and you will find a reference for a local travel agent Ibrahim. He is good and can arrange the trip for you.
I’m a history person! I’m looking to book 1/4-1/12 and thank you for this-I just joined the bowl and will look deeper!
I flew through Turkey one time - it was transit there - so just went to Istanbul airport for connecting flight. Turkish Airlines economy class was decent - food was good but seats were very tight and compact - but to be fair it was also the cheapest at the time so did not mind.
Great! Thank you for this. Will definitely take note of this!
Make sure you carry the international charger adaptor so that you can plug it anywhere in your hotel and charge your mobile phones before leaving. You can also buy there if you want.
Use their public transpo to save. If there is no public transport during midnight, then cabs are available. Ulusoy and Safran are the best bus services and are equipped with Wi-Fi facility. During long journeys, passengers are treated to snacks and beverages onboard. You can book these buses online.
Literary? I've read Snow by Orhan Pamuk. Decent book but it really pissed off my German pal.
Itinerary, TY for the correction 🫡
I have found that YouTube vloggers are wonderful help on where to visit and what things to do in Türkiye!!!
Turkey allows people to dress whichever they like, therefore you can see women wearing both Burqas and western clothing. However, you must take care to dress appropriately and respect societal norms surrounding attire. You must cover your head if you go to a mosque or an area known for its conservatism. Therefore, it is strongly advised to always carry a scarf or shawl in your bag.
Don’t kiss in public
While Ankara should be visited before leaving Turkey, Istanbul receives all the attention and is a wonderful city.
Istanbul's con artists are very persistent but not at all creative.
Learn the differences between the Greek and Roman alphabets and prepare for charades because less Greeks know English than I recall in other parts of Western Europe.
Before heading to Turkey, make sure you make a checklist of all the places to visit. Proper research will help you to list the most popular and noteworthy places in Turkey. To travel around Turkey without proper knowledge is like driving around without GPS. This is one of the best Turkey travel tips to start your journey to your dream destination.
One advice is to learn their basic language. If you learn a few phrases in Turkish then you can have a decent conversation with the locals. Even at the bookstores, you are likely to find books for Turkish-to-English translation. This is one of the essential Turkey travel advice that we can give you.
