Anyone else noticed that female associates tend to be treated less harshly by partners? It's like this Gordon Ramsey meme where if I make a mistake, the partner calls me a 'fucking donkey,' and if a female associates makes the same mistake, it's "oh dear, oh dear. gorgeous".

Male partners, maybe. But female partners, not at all

likefunnysmart

Either way A1 sorry you’re dealing with it. There are good partners out there and I hope you link up with them.

I disagree strongly. I find male partners go way easier in male associates and male (and female) partners are harsher on female associates.

likehelpful

100% they’re harsher on female associates. And on top of substantive criticism women get feedback on looks too. If viewed attractive “that’s why she got staffed/got the job”. If viewed as unattractive/not put together that’s talked about too

likesmart

Perhaps to their faces. But behind their backs, female associates are spoken of in derogatory terms, given poor assignments, and not promoted to partner.

Just look at the leaders of your trial teams and practice groups, and the low numbers of female equity partners, for instance — those are the true measures of how the genders are treated at law firms.

Women partners/bosses were much harsher with an unnecessary attitude to me as a woman. I think other women know what I’m talking about and wouldn’t be surprised.

like

Agree fully. It’s so disappointing as a woman that my worst supervisors have either been women or men that hate their wives

like

Yes, women famously have a much easier time in corporate work environments! It was built just for them!

Male counterparts get invited on ski trips, golf outings, weekend trips with the male partners and clients. Female associates don’t.

like

Strongly disagree. Male partners tend to be way more relaxed with male associates and 10x harder on female associates. Then male associates get praise for doing bare minimum.

like

They may be nicer in surface level conversations but anything career related they are not

like

Yeah 100%, female associate blew it on a DD memo and the partner was apologizing to her. I was listening in like dude I would’ve had my head chopped off if I turned this in
