How do you define burnout? What are symptoms and things that make you believe that you are going through a burnout.

Same symptoms as OP.

Burned out as first year

Yes, I’m a fifth year and burnout started last year. I lateraled to a bad sweatshop though, which was a mistake. It’s now much better after I moved. It’ll get much better if you survive year four and make an effort to change to a non-sweatshop firm

Yes. Lesson was to next time not move firms just because you dislike a few things. Grass is definitely, 100%, not greener elsewhere.

Go clerk for a year. Best sabbatical out there.

At least at my firm, secondments are only open to 5th years and up (but exceptions may be made for exceptional 4th years).

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

I actually love it. I was a paralegal in BL during law school. Maybe I am use to the environment? What am I missing? Help me remove the rose colored glasses. The cases are interesting, pay is fantastic, offices are beautiful, and the research resources are a big reason why I never want to leave. Sure there are partners/senior associates that don’t respect you or your time. That happens everywhere and would mean you need to move firms or sections. What am I missing?
