I used to have locks. Was hired at EY with them. Made the personal choice to cut them though. I’m a male btw
I just had an argument with my white boyfriend about this: he said many employers don't see them as professional. I say don't let what white people think control our culture
I think depending on the type/style of locs, the professionalism argument doesn’t have any merit. But as a lot of people said, it’s all in how you wear them and carry yourself
I don’t have locs but I’m a black woman with short natural hair. I interviewed that way, present my hair to clients that way, etc. If I straighten it’s only for a day or two when I feel like it. I also wear braids and other black hairstyles. Everyone around me knows it as normal and there’s no issue. When I’m working 90+ hours, dressing and acting professionally, and always coming through for my team, no one gets to dictate my hair.
Amen to that!
Similar to EY 1. I was hired with locs and made the personal decision to cut them. Nothing changed before/after honestly.
My two cents (and I’m not black) that it’s definitely okay and try not to worry too much about what the firm thinks although I know that’s hard... you should be allowed to have your hair as you wish. It’s not like you are dying it blue or hot pink. I’ve allowed corporate America to change me in beginning stages of my career and now I try my best to be myself.. but it’s hard. But anyway no it’s not unprofessional.
Just be on point, get your jobs taken care of and you should be alright. As always, just don't give the naysayers any excuses.
