Anyone transition back to consulting after maternity leave and successfully set and maintain new boundaries/expectations for evening/weekend time, travel, etc.? Starting to feel the anxiety of going back and questioning if I can possibly balance this career with being a present mom. Realizing how few boundaries I actually had up until going on leave. Any tips for the transition back? Or anyone realize they needed a role/career change? 3am thoughts while I nurse my baby lol

been there. I had my boundaries after I came back from leave but found it super hard. there was a little bit of "well this is the job you signed up for" but also, it was my own guilt and disappointment. I knew it was career limiting and I just didn't feel it was a good fit anymore. I know what consulting is, I did it for 10+ years and not only was I not able to but honestly I didn't want to anymore.

anyways that was like 8 years ago and I'm in BSv now and it's much better :)

BSv = Business Services

so far, so good. I know that experience can differ wildly in BSv but my experience has been great. I agree that it's not the best time due to all the cuts. wish you luck during this transition for you!

Same thoughts! I came back after my first baby and was not the best with boundaries. Now with my second baby, I really want to be better at my boundaries and I fear consulting is not the best place for me

Congrats on the second baby! I hope you are able to enforce them better this time around or make a change if it’s best for you :)

I have pretty strict boundaries but it’s hard to maintain even traveling just one night a week when everyone else is doing 3. It’s easier to protect the evenings when I’m home but I haven’t figured out the travel.

like

Potential travel is probably my biggest stressor. I wasn’t traveling more than ~once/twice per month in the year prior to my leave, but I’ve done years of Mondays-Thursdays and thinking of that (or even one night per week) terrifies me. I have so much new found empathy for the parents on past projects. I hope you are able to maintain that if it works for you and lose some of the comparison and guilt - I’m sure you modeling that behavior and a reasonable schedule means so much to those on your teams ♥️

Depends on your level. I made partner between my first and second. Was easier as a partner. Was much easier the third time!

Read “I know how she does it”. While I was actually already doing 90% of what was written it was empowering to realize it WAS the right thing.

You can do this!

I am an SA1 in the UK, 3 years in the firm. In the UK there’s a threat of losing your job if you fail your cpa equivalent exams twice. My anxiety started from there when I sat my final 3 exams in July and it builds up as I started to work a very complex big job straight after the exam. I have also been constantly working busy seasons (dec, march, june, and sept year end) and I it is pretty taxing. Taking short term mental health leave now but not sure how it will be better when I’m back, advice?
