Portfolios and demonstrated ability now outweigh degrees in many companies, especially startups. However, enterprise employers still list degrees as filters for compliance or internal equity reasons.

For most tech roles, demonstrated ability is outweighing formal degrees more than it used to. A strong GitHub, real projects, or a portfolio that shows you can ship and maintain something tangible carries real weight. Degrees can still matter in some companies (especially larger or more traditional ones), but proof of work is increasingly what differentiates candidates.

Showing technical skills reads a lot better. Make sure you have a strong resume, but definitely leverage GitHub or whatever you have. Also, don’t be scared to try freelancing. It’s rarely steady, but it’s something in the meantime.
