State Thomas, Knox Henderson, oak lawn/turtle creek
Also, want to add that I moved to Dallas from Atlanta not too long ago—welcome!
Limited parts of uptown and Knox. Maybe legacy west in Plano? Cedar springs/oak lawn but very bar-heavy there.
Depends what vibe you want, where you want to walk to, and whether you are looking for a condo or house. Generally Dallas is not very walkable for amenities unless you are wanting to live in an apartment/condo in Uptown or Downtown. But those areas won’t feel traditionally residential.
For properties to own: state Thomas, victory park/crescent area (mainly high rise condos mixed with offices and very expensive though), Knox Henderson, farmers market. Areas that are slightly less walkable but a step cheaper include oak lawn and the area north of Blackburn but south of Knox near McKinney and Cole. Note parts of oak lawn (especially close to cedar springs) are heavily LGBT.
I live near state Thomas and don’t have a car! Very easy to get around here
Yes, but it’ll cost you $$$. The RE market is crazy here right now. Relocated last fall and still renting unless you want to shell out a few mil. I live North Dallas because we wanted space, so a car is necessary. But lots of good neighborhoods outside of the city if you don’t mind commuting.
Lots of good recommendations here. Wanted to also mention Lower Greenville as another one to look into in case it works better for your budget. Not as walkable as Uptown, Knox Henderson etc., but still close to downtown and a more traditional neighborhood feel (as close as we get to Morningside and Virginia Highlands as far as architecture etc.). Can walk to some coffee shops, bars, restaurants etc.
Just here to mention that while State Thomas and Knox Henderson are very walkable and have lots of cute condos and townhouses, they are also very “young” areas, meaning tons and tons of bars and lots of car traffic and foot traffic on the weekends, especially at night. So if you’re looking for quiet, those are not the areas. I live in Oak Lawn (on the other side of Lemmon from the main gayborhood where it is also very loud on the weekends) and it’s quiet and peaceful but also a bit less walkable. Also, don’t forget that it’s hot as hell here in the summer so you probably won’t be walking anywhere in the summer, no matter how walkable your neighborhood is.
I live in Knox-Henderson and it’s very walkable. There are a lot of restaurants and bars along Henderson, and Lower Greenville is close if you are on the Henderson side. It’s definitely a popular neighborhood for young professionals.
