NYC has city and state tax besides federal tax
Go to NYC if you want to be a better attorney.
Depends on the practice area tbh. If you’re related to energy and oil and like good ole BBQ, than nah lol
A lot more cowboy boots with suits than in NY
And half the pretentious jerks.
Never having to wear a suit
Not true in all respects several big name TX firms are still very formal. But know that it's become more laxed post Covid.
Having worked in BigLaw in both places, NYC and Texas tend to be on different “schedules.” Generally, in my experience, Texas usually starts earlier (8/9am) and leaves the office earlier, NYC comes in late (a lot of people arrived around 9:30/10am) and stays very late. Face time was much more important in NYC, and the dress code was also much more formal.
I had a diverse practice in both areas, so my work didn’t change too much, others I know had more of a focus on finance companies and banks in NYC versus Energy companies here in TX. Also a lot of NYC lawyers look down their nose at Texas; an attitude of “nowhere else in the world can possibly be as sophisticated or smart as those of us in NYC”, so prepare for snark.
More boots, which is fun. Didn’t wear a suit. Try to respect vacation. More friendly to your face. Had a good time there. COL is much lower. But don’t be fooled, still big law.
On average, more diversity in industry exposure (Texas tends to be energy/industrial heavy). My impression is also that NYC biglaw tends to have incrementally more expectations on face time and billable hours - though again, on average (there are some sweaty TX shops), and not based off personal experience. Lifestyle in and outside of firm also obviously different.
If you enjoy giving away more of your money, then NYC 👋

I've worked or simmered at 3 firms in Texas and summered at 1 firm in DC. Associates in the DC office worked longer hours than all 3 Texas offices. That's true at my current firms when I'm working with associates in CA/NY/DC too.
