I think this depends on the company's policies. In some cases the driver would be fired, in other cases he would be fired and have to pay for the machinery, in other cases the company assumes everything and reprimands the driver.
I think it all depends on what caused the damage. If the driver was drunk or negligent, it should be their responsibility. But if the company allowed them to drive the truck without full training, if it was an accident or if the truck had mechanical problems, it seems unfair to charge a person who surely does not earn enough to be responsible for that.
I am a driver, I have more than 10 years of experience, and I would never work in a truck without insurance. It is your responsibility, not the drivers.
In this case, it is recommended that the company always have the truck insured, as it is driven by humans and accidents are always a possibility.
If your driver was operating an uninsured vehicle, you could be in some serious trouble depending on if you knew your driver was going to use that particular vehicle. Driving without insurance is a serious violation of law and you can't afford to let these things slide if you are trying to run a business
I would say that it depends on the commercial insurance policy but if there is none, then you would be responsible for paying to repair the truck.
