i had an internship at a boutique firm once, the one i was at does small to medium size deals (smaller size not volume). Small team is great, get to interact with clients right off the bat and see all parts of the process from sourcing to closing, huge bonuses for employees sourcing a deal etc..
So yeah definitely a part of it is connections and network that more senior positions have, but also as i said there’s a lot of importance put on sourcing the projects (which is also done through first contact, research and more research to find interesting opportunities in the area and even contact them etc.. with preliminary valuations or sell opportunities) and the firms we dealt with are too small for bigger firms + price is lower than bigger firms i would guess but the team is also very small with high bonuses for the projects + the company gained good reputation
