I think a summary like that is a good idea. I happened to hear an interview with a recruiter who said they would look at a resume for literally seconds before deciding whether to keep it or put it in the discard pile. And they advised looking at your own resume for 15 seconds and seeing what you get from it. That's when having a concise summary up top starts to make sense, as you want something that will grab their interest.
I don’t think they are really necessary. So I never put a summary on my resume. However I don’t think it would hurt your chances of getting hired if you did include one.
That’s a really common question résumé summaries can be helpful when you’re trying to pivot, but they’re not always necessary. A short 2–3 sentence summary can give recruiters quick context about your background and your goal, especially if you’re moving from management into consulting. The key is keeping it clear, targeted, and aligned with the job you’re applying for. If it adds clarity, it’s worth including — if it feels repetitive, you can skip it.
When I was navigating similar résumé decisions during my own job search, I worked with a job search specialist who helped me understand what recruiters actually pay attention to and how to shape my résumé for a transition. If you want guidance on whether a summary would strengthen your pivot into consulting, you can reach out to her at carolynchristiehiringteam.gmail.com.
I always have a summary. It never takes me longer than 1-4 months to find a job - maybe its my resume, maybe it’s my industry but I have switched industries. You only get a few seconds to capture someone. Make your summary a great one. Think of it as a shortened cover letter so to speak.
