Are you striving to be upper management or a CEO, or are you happy where you're at? Everyone treats me like I'm lacking some big career ambition because I have no desire to move into a major leadership role. I'm happy with my career where it is, why is that so wrong?

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I'd like to move up from where I am into something more challenging and interesting. I also recognize I'm not going to be a CEO and I don't really have any interest in joining upper management (and I'd probably be bored stiff doing that).

Exactly—ambition can take a lot of different forms. Wanting more challenge without chasing upper management makes complete sense, and it’s refreshing to hear others say they don’t want to force themselves into a path that doesn’t fit.

Perfectly happy being where I’m at and have no drive to climb the ladder. I’m good with the workload, good with what they pay me. Everyone is allowed to have their own goals, even when they look different from the traditional path.

I think quite a few people end up being unhappy in their work because they are just following the path that leads to a lot of roles that aren’t meant for everyone. A perfect example is people managers who have no desire to actually manage people.

Not everyone wants to go into executive roles, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We need rock stars (technical subject matter experts who slay in implementation/technical roles) at least as much as we need shooting stars (folks on the upward trajectory career path) to keep the business rolling. Be a rock star! Good organizations will recognize the value you are bringing to the company as a rock star.

Well said. Companies thrive because of both types—those who drive strategy and those who deliver at a high level in specialized roles. Recognizing and valuing “rock stars” is such an important piece of building strong organizations.

You’re absolutely right—there’s nothing wrong with being happy where you are. Not everyone wants to climb to the very top, and ambition doesn’t have to mean “CEO or bust.” Being satisfied and fulfilled in your role is just as valid a career goal.

I want to move up. I am so career driven and I chase titles to be honest with you. The money that comes along with it wouldn't hurt though either.

I guess I'm not sure what I'm working towards. I'm not happy where I'm at but I don't know what I want either.

Most people actually won’t go into leadership of exec roles so I don’t know where this stigma came from. I’m so happy as an IC and have no interest in leadership.

So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

Looking for some advice on a career change. I work in a technical role and have well-developed soft skills. I want to transition to UX (w/ focus on accessibility). There are a lot of UX educational programs out there, some very new, e.g. Dribbble, and costs are all over the place - General Assembly is $15k (and full-time), CareerFoundry almost $8k, and then many others at a fraction of the price. Reviews also vary wildly. Are these more expensive programs worth the huge increase in cost?

I applied for a job at Visa and was contacted the same day. A few days later I had a 30-minute screening interview with the hiring manager. I knew I was very early in the process since the job had only been posted for a few days. It's been 3 weeks and I haven't heard back, even after reaching out to the recruiter. Have I been ghosted or is there still hope? Does anyone at Visa have insights? Looks like there are a ton of jobs posted so maybe they are just backed up?
