First of all, go read the book Quiet by Susan Cain.
Then, decide how much of the issue is introversion vs shyness vs. anti-social.
And then figure how much to fake, when, and how. And if you’re truly introverted, find & protect solo time in your life/day to recharge.
Conversation Starter
The only place my introversion was a problem was client-side. Being surrounded by chatty extroverts all day was sooo draining. Agencies usually know a lot of creatives are introverts. If your current place doesn’t get that, somewhere else will.
It really depends on what the feedback was pertaining to. If it was positioned as a collaboration barrier, inability to stand up for the work, or lack of charisma in presentations those are areas you can realistically improve. But it is harder to come back from once you’ve been internally labelled even if you do work on it. And if it’s truly just a personality thing that you can’t really work on, your manager needs to focus on giving actionable feedback. Hearing “you’re not the right fit” doesn’t really do anything for anyone but make you feel bad.
If I was in put in that position, I’d be getting my resume ready.
It can be hard to come back from that, but it's not impossible. As a fellow introvert, I've had to be far more outward and chatty than I normally would, and it helps.
How tiring that is… YKIYK, being an introvert
Fake it or find a place that values your work over
extroversion.
Is it affecting your work? As a fellow introvert I kinda just have to fake it everyday, if you’re in a senior enough creative role you’re expected to make an effort to be extrovert/chatty.
“Ultimatum”?? Who the hell are they to try to change me.
I'm a creative introvert too. During the course of my career I found out I preferred to come in, just do my job, and then leave. And I wasn't a fan of the fake socializing, forced small talk at the coffee machine, the mandatory team building events, etc. So I decided to go remote 6 years ago and decided I'd never go back into an office unless I was forced to (if remote work dries up).
I'd look about maybe transitioning into remote work, it might fit your personality more.
