I’d say it’s more common for consultants to support audits than for auditors to support consulting engagements.
Why would I need an audit staff on my consulting engagement (which normally causes issue with independence restrictions) when I have a whole bank of consultants who have the knowledge to do the work
If your knowledge is in tech companies that you audit, then we wouldn't be allowed to work with that tech anyway.
I'm in a specialist assurance practice that both support audit teams and also do channel 2 (consulting) work for other clients. So not sure how it's set up over there, but I'd guess you would be doing audit most of the time from how you described it. Obviously you can't so consulting work for the clients you do audit work for.
Truth is I have no interest in audit but need a job 😭
I’d be auditing for a specialised technology/sector, which I could also consult for (not many at firm familiar). But I wonder too if I could do broader tech projects (like general tech transformation) as I have a bit of relevant experience
Why would they hire you in their practice to make you available for other practices ?
It’s not unusual for practices to have people work outside of their area, but it’s not the norm. You can also transfer. All of that requires effort from you, building network with other practices and an opening where they couldn’t find anyone else. So I wouldn’t accept an offer based on that assumption.
You are not getting it. If the practice you are being hired at doesn’t do project in your “niche” area, why would they hire you ?
Your last statement is a generic statement of all firms. But it doesn’t mean at all that they will put you in another practice’s project after hiring you for theirs . You will need to do a lot of heavy lifting to get into the right practice. Just be aware of it.
And again, niche or not, the practice that does the work you want to do, they would always prefer to staff it with their people first. In case they don’t have it, that may create an opening for you. I have never seen anyone from assurance suddenly doing tech consulting work - without getting transferred to that practice.

Nope, can’t do consulting work if in audit line.

It is nearly impossible to get audit resource to do consulting work in our firm. Resource management is completely separate from
